What Affects the Cost of Fertility Treatment?

At RSCNJ, we know fertility care is deeply personal — and the financial side can feel just as complex as the medical side. Our experienced financial counselors are here to guide you from your very first consultation through every step of your treatment plan.

In New Jersey, fertility costs can vary significantly depending on your course of treatment, insurance coverage, and more. Some key factors influencing total out-of-pocket expenses include:

  • Type of treatment: Simpler procedures like IUI are generally more affordable, while advanced options like IVF tend to cost more. Use of donor eggs, sperm, or embryos will also affect pricing, as will pursuing specialized services like genetic testing and cryopreservation.
Number of cycles needed: It’s not uncommon for patients to go through multiple cycles of IVF, egg retrieval, or embryo transfer to achieve pregnancy. Since each cycle is billed separately, undergoing more rounds can raise costs significantly.

  • Fertility medications: Medication protocols will vary from patient to patient. Certain drugs used to stimulate the ovaries, trigger ovulation, or support early pregnancy can add substantially to the total treatment cost.

  • Donor or gestational carrier involvement: Using donor eggs, sperm, or embryos — or working with a gestational carrier — will add medical, legal, and administrative costs. These services are more complex and are typically priced accordingly.

  • Laboratory and add-on services: Optional or medically recommended lab procedures — such as genetic testing, hormone testing, or the freezing and storage of eggs, embryos, or sperm — can add to the base cost of treatment.

  • Insurance coverage and state mandate: New Jersey mandates certain types of fertility coverage, but benefits can vary widely depending on your specific insurance provider and plan. Our team will help you understand what’s covered, what isn’t, and how to plan financially — whether you’re using insurance, paying out of pocket, or a combination of both.

At RSCNJ, we’re committed to providing comprehensive, transparent support for all aspects of your care. No matter what your specific situation, our knowledgeable team will help you make informed decisions that align with both your family-building goals and your budget.

Fertility Treatment Cost FAQs

  • Insurance coverage for IVF can vary widely depending on your specific insurance provider and plan. Some insurance policies may cover a significant portion — or even all — of the costs associated with IVF, while others may offer limited or no coverage at all. It’s important to carefully review your insurance plan and speak directly with your provider to understand your benefits. If your coverage is provided through your employer, your HR or benefits representative can also be a helpful resource.

New Jersey is one of several states with a fertility coverage mandate in place, requiring large-group health plans to cover treatments including IVF, IUI, PGT, and more when medically necessary. Keep in mind, however, that self-insured employers (often large companies) are exempt, as are those with fewer than 50 employees, and religious organizations. Certain services and procedures may also be exempt. Be sure to read the fine print and get in touch with your provider and HR department for clarification on any questions you may have.

The financial counselors at RSCNJ are here to guide you through your insurance coverage and help you make the most of your benefits. If treatment costs aren't covered, we’ll work with you to explore flexible financing options that fit your budget and needs.

  • Whether or not egg freezing is covered by insurance will depend on your individual provider and plan. Similar to IVF, some insurance policies offer comprehensive coverage, while others may provide little to no benefits.

Coverage often hinges on the medical reason for freezing. Elective egg freezing — chosen for personal or lifestyle reasons, such as postponing parenthood — is typically not covered. In contrast, egg freezing that is considered medically necessary — for example, preserving fertility before cancer treatment, receiving treatment for an autoimmune disease, or undergoing gender-affirming care — is more likely to be covered by insurance.

  • To understand your fertility coverage, start by taking a close look at your insurance plan. Since policies can vary widely, it’s important to review your benefits carefully. If anything is unclear, don’t hesitate to reach out to your insurance company — they can explain what’s included and help answer specific questions.

If your insurance comes through your employer, your HR or benefits department should be able to provide additional insight, especially if your company offers fertility-related coverage. At RSCNJ, our team is here to support you every step of the way. We’ll work with you to verify your benefits and help you understand exactly what your plan includes, so you can focus on your path to parenthood.

  • Yes, in most cases, you can use health savings accounts (HSA) or flexible spending accounts (FSA) to cover a wide range of fertility-related costs. These accounts typically allow you to pay for treatments like IVF, egg freezing, IUI, frozen embryo transfers, and genetic testing (PGT). Eligible expenses often extend to medications, lab work, and diagnostic procedures as well.

However, eligibility can differ depending on the specifics of your plan. Check your HSA or FSA documentation or speak directly with your benefits provider to understand exactly what’s covered. For example, certain expenses like long-term storage of eggs, sperm, or embryos may not be eligible.

  • The total cost of IVF typically encompasses several stages of the treatment process, including:

    • Initial consultation and diagnostic testing: These early steps involve comprehensive medical evaluations to better understand your fertility health. From there, a treatment plan will be laid out and tailored to your needs.

    • Egg retrieval: During this brief outpatient procedure, mature eggs are collected from the ovaries for fertilization, genetic testing, or freezing.

    • Fertilization: Retrieved eggs will be combined with sperm from a partner or donor in the lab in order to create embryos.

Embryo culture and monitoring: Once fertilized, embryos will be carefully cultured and monitored to ensure healthy development before one or more are selected for transfer to the uterus.

  • Yes, using donor eggs or donor sperm can increase the overall cost of fertility treatments such as IVF and IUI. Donor eggs and sperm are not typically included in standard treatment packages and are considered an additional expense. This is due to the complexity of the donation process, which involves thorough medical and psychological screening, laboratory testing, legal requirements, and careful coordination between donors and intended parents — all of which contribute to the added cost.

At RSCNJ, we partner with several trusted agencies to offer anonymous fresh egg donation, as well as frozen egg options through leading banks like MyEggBank and Fairfax Egg Bank. Our team is here to guide you through the selection process, answer your questions, and ensure a seamless experience from start to finish.

Whether you’re exploring donor options due to medical reasons, pursuing parenthood as a single parent, or growing your family as an LGBTQ+ individual or couple, the team at RSCNJ is here to walk you through all financial considerations and help you plan with confidence.

  • While a cycle of IVF usually covers several related procedures, you may be responsible for additional expenses depending on your personalized treatment plan. These can include medications, genetic testing of embryos, anesthesia fees, embryo freezing, long-term embryo storage, and any frozen embryo transfers you may undergo later on.

At RSCNJ, we provide a clear cost breakdown before treatment begins, so you know exactly what to expect. Our financial coordinators will also be available to walk you through your options and help you plan accordingly.

  • Yes. At RSCNJ, we understand that fertility care can be a significant financial investment. That’s why we offer a variety of financing options and work with trusted third-party partners, including BUNDL, which allows patients to pay one upfront cost to cover multiple IVF cycles.

Whether you’re paying out of pocket or need support covering what insurance doesn’t, our financial coordinators will work with you to find a payment solution that fits your budget.

  • The cost of an initial fertility evaluation can vary depending on the tests and procedures recommended, but it typically includes consultations, bloodwork, and an ultrasound. Many insurance plans will cover diagnostic testing related to infertility, especially if you’re having trouble conceiving. At RSCNJ, our team will verify your insurance benefits ahead of time so you understand any out-of-pocket costs before your first visit.
